Following a successful market entry with their private online tuition platform, our client was looking to expand their offering to schools.
The problem to solve was how to create a system tailored specifically to schools' own needs, and which was intuitive to use, but which continued to utilize the original platform infrastructure and components.

We continued to use our tried-and-tested 2-week Sprints, creating an epic for the school tuition product with over thirty individual stories under it. Each story was created with a requirements specification to meet the definition of done and then progressed through the workflow until the epic itself was complete.
The decision was taken to continue to offer 1-1 lessons so as to limit the project to a single goal (a school-specific LoB) rather than two goals (a school-specific LoB and group lessons). The My Tutor and Mercury1 teams collaborated throughout so that we could maintain our long-term vision and commitment to building and refactoring the system to function as though the schools branch was part of the original scope, rather than an afterthought.
The impact of My Tutor's school programme has been a real success story. Following their 2020 Impact Report, they found that:
90% of pupils felt they'd improved in their subject thanks to their MyTutor sessions
92% of teachers would recommend MyTutor to another school
100% of teachers felt well-supported throughout their programmes
In 2019, pupils made 1 whole grade of progress after 1 term of MyTutor sessions - 2.5x the progress of their peers
The new line of business required major refactoring and build-out, with a full reworking from front-end user dashboards through to the creation of new entities and finance and booking processes.
The result was a new branch of both the business and the platform, with newly designed front-end pages for schools users and admin users, a new version of the finance, bookings and classroom functions, and some complex changes to the review, feedback and ratings system.
The schools line of business was able to launch in September 2016 ready for the new academic year with rapid engagement, growing significantly through 2017 and to date. My Tutor has won industry recognition and a number of awards for both their platform and their outstanding collaboration with schools.
