When the founders of MyTutor approached Mercury1, they had a single goal: to make high-quality, affordable tuition accessible for all.
The online tutoring market in the US was beginning to develop and so it was clear that the model could be successful as long as we were able to produce a high-fidelity product to connect school pupils inspirational university students for one-to-one, online tutorials.
What we needed was an online platform with a public-facing website, logged in account areas, bookings engine, payment gateway, linked accounts for parents and students, and a fantastic lesson space. If we could launch with these elements we could start up a business and then iterate to develop new features based on feedback, business needs, and a proven ROI.
"Our innovative online platform is live, flexible and easy to use, with over 10,000 fantastic tutors available" - My Tutor
The My Tutor application design was parent-led from the outset, with a strong focus on removing as much of the frustration of finding the right tutor as possible.
Collaboration was key, with stakeholders providing feedback on new iterations as we released them to a test environment and lots of discussion around the best business and technological strategies. Working together via JIRA and numerous Slack channels to form a seamless single-team approach, we stuck to an Agile two-weekly sprint cycle with weekly releases and plenty of reviews along the way.
Varying our approach between quick fixes and slow R&D-led development meant we could deliver high-impact changes as economically as possible and in line with My Tutor's business roadmap.
A shared vision, lots of digital collaborations and plenty of fun have resulted in My Tutor being both the UK's leading online tuition provider and the owners of an award-winning ed-tech platform.
My Tutor saw vast growth from the moment we made our first release to live in 2014. Continuing to be the most awesome client to work with and remaining true to their goal of providing accessible tuition to all, it's been an honour to see the My Tutor platform as a UK market leader.
To date they've received the following recognition:
Best Tutoring Company, Education Investor Awards -2018
Finalists, Bett Awards for EdTec -2019
Finalists, Education Resources Awards -2019
Partner, Education Endowment Foundation Online Tuition Pilot, 2020
Tuition Partner, National Tutoring Programme 2020
The team's focus, right from the start, was on ensuring that the My Tutor application could scale both horizontally and vertically without outages and in the most economical way. We wanted to be certain that My Tutor could grow their business quickly, and that server costs would not be the limiting factor.
To do so we created a highly scale-able infrastructure using a powerful elastic work-load aware scaling logic and launch-specific instances. From the front end, the application is easy and simple to use, but behind the scenes there are some advanced tech solutions hard at work!
